Pro-Palestinian Activism at a Crossroads: Hope and Heartbreak Post-Election

The Uncommitted Movement's Gamble

Amidst Israel's escalating assault on Gaza, a surge of pro-Palestinian activists emerged. Emboldened by the 2024 elections, they strategized to pressure Democratic lawmakers into distancing the party from Israel's offensive. Their hopes soared with the possibility of galvanizing voters and challenging the perceived choice between xenophobia and permissive support for Israel.

However, the gamble has backfired. The Biden administration has shown little deviation in its pro-Israel stance, while the incoming Trump administration has swiftly positioned itself as even more hostile towards pro-Palestinian activism.

A Grim Forecast

Faced with the incoming hostility and frustrations from centrist Democrats, pro-Palestinian activists find themselves at a crossroads.

"Our community will be subjected to more surveillance and violence," lamented Abbas Alawieh, an organizer with the Uncommitted movement. "And it won't be alone."

Sandra Tamari, Executive Director of the Adalah Justice Project, warns that pro-Palestinian activism has become "the canary in the coal mine for broader authoritarian threats to dissent."

Rethinking Strategies

Amidst the setbacks, some analysts urge self-criticism within the pro-Palestinian movement. James Zogby, founder of the Arab American Institute, suggests that by withholding support for Vice President Kamala Harris, activists may have limited their leverage.

"We need to shift towards local political tactics," states Politico, emphasizing economic pressure campaigns, protests, and community organizing. "There's less leverage in Washington now."

Seeking Allies in Unexpected Places

Despite the challenges, some see a potential ally in Massad Boulos, the president-elect's campaign envoy to the Arab and Muslim community in Michigan. Boulos has close ties to Trump's inner circle and may have influence in softening the administration's stance.

A Call for Unity and Resilience

"We should be critical of our own approaches while also remaining united," urges Abdelhalim Abdelrahman, a Palestinian-American analyst. "We need to find ways to influence the Trump administration without alienating potential allies."

As the pro-Palestinian movement navigates this uncertain landscape, resilience and a commitment to community will be essential to keep the embers of activism alive.
